Double closet rod brackets: spacing, height, and what to actually buy
Stacking two rods doubles hanging space in the same footprint. The part people get wrong isn't the hardware — it's the spacing between rods and the height of the top one. Here's both, plus your two real hardware options.

Two ways to build a double rod
Dedicated double-rod bracket
A single wall-mounted plate holding both rods at fixed spacing. Faster to install, keeps both rods perfectly aligned without separate measuring. Downside: concentrates more total load onto fewer wall anchor points, so stud-mounted heavy-duty hardware matters more here than on a single rod.
Two independent rod sets
Standard end brackets (or a rod-and-shelf combo) installed twice, at the two heights above. More flexible — you can adjust spacing later, or remove one rod without disturbing the other. Takes more careful measuring to keep both rods level and properly spaced.
What to buy

Frequently asked questions
Do both rods need center supports?
Apply the same span rule to each rod independently — if either rod's unsupported length exceeds the thresholds in the center support guide, add one to that rod specifically. It's common for only the longer or more heavily loaded rod to need it.
Can I convert a single rod closet to double later?
Yes — this is a common retrofit. You're essentially just adding a second set of end brackets at a new height, either above or below the existing rod, following the spacing guidance above.
Is a double rod bracket stronger or weaker than a single one?
Depends which build option you use. A dedicated double-rod plate concentrates more combined weight onto one set of wall anchors, so it needs to be rated higher and mounted into studs. Two independent single-rod bracket sets each carry only their own rod's load, so standard hardware is fine for each individually.
